Great basic machine

I'm very happy with my new Singer. I've been looking for a machine that will last me a long time, can do all the basic stuff, and isn't expensive. This machine is the one. I was considering buying a machine that also did embroidery, but I realized that I didn't really need that, and the warranty is longer on all manual machines. (25 years!) The machine has 25 stiches, half of which are stretch stiches, but I think that's enough for most projects. The automatic needle threader is a bit tricky, but it's not hard to do it yourself anyway, so I don't mind. I also appreciate that the machine has a light over the sewing area...a very nice added feature!
If you are new to sewing, the machine comes with a dvd detailing how to thread the machine, which I think is the hardest part about machine sewing. If you do not thread the machine properly, you get bunched up extra thread. Once you have the machine threaded properly, it was very easy to sew! I recommend practicing with different stitches at first to see what the proper tension/length levels are for the different stitches. |
Perfect Machine for New Learners

I adore my Esteem II. Got it as a Christmas present this year, and it has been great for making and tailoring costumes for my college's dance group. I'm relatively new to sewing, but this machine has been a breeze to learn on. It has a ton of stitches, as well as a button-hole-maker (can't figure out how to work it yet but it seems like an awesome tool!) It's easy to thread, clean, and transport - it even has a built-in cubby to hold stitch-ripper and bobbins, and comes with a few such supplies so you can get started right off the bat.
This machine will definitely be a money-saver (and a fun toy) for the bachelor/ette years ahead.
I'm in love... :) |
Bobbin thread will get ya!

| The first few projects went beautifully! Then....the fatal bobbin issue. The bobbin thread jammed, no biggie..right? Well, I have done everything I can think of...adjusting tension, resetting bobbin, oiled, changing out thread, changing needle...and this machine is screwed. I have owned it for a big WEEK! I understand this is a starter machine, but it should work without a hitch. It is very simple and to the point machine. This machine is very overpriced for its poor workmanship. I will be taking it back ASAP and replacing it with a Brother, which I should I have purchased a Brother in the first place! NO, I would not recommend this machine to anyone. |
Never Could Get The Machine to Sew
|

| I purchased this sewing machine a few weeks ago from Target. Watched the instructional cd on threading, bobbin winding, etc. Then read the manual that by the way was very annoying (it came in 3 languages: one page English, next page Spanish, next page another language. You could not read continuously without flipping thru several pages to get your next page). Then I started by winding the bobbin. Then threaded the upper machine (manually). Machine comes with an automatic threader but it did not work. I was never able to get the machine to sew. Thread kept jamming in the bobbin area. After 3 hours I gave up and took the machine back to Target. |
